Stone Temple Pilots’ Purple Album Review: A Timeless Grunge Rock Classic Revisited

Album Review: Very interesting listen. Stone Temple Pilots songwriting is incredible in my opinion. I feel like if they were in any other era of music before this they would be one of the greats, but because their music is behind this controversial wall of grunge most people look past it.

To be fair, there were a few songs on this album where the grunge aspect took over, but I don’t think that it ever completely outshines the incredible and melodic based songwriting, paired with great riffs and Scott wieland’s voice which perfectly matches the songwriting style.

I love this album but I think it is often overlooked because of some of the tracks which are “too loud” and “grungey”. Overall I disagree and think the grunge aspect adds character to the album. While I do sometimes think that stp’s songwriting could have been more impactful if it catered to a more mainstream audience, the grunge characteristics fit their music perfectly and makes them more balanced as a band.

Favorite tracks: Vasoline, lounge fly, interstate love song, still remains, silvergun superman, big empty, unglued, kitchenware and candybars

Album Review Rating: strong 8-light 9
